There are different reasons why embassies, consulates and immigration authorities can cancel a visa without any prior notice.  Here we explain five possible causes:

  1. Staying in the U.S. for longer than permitted, even if it is only 24 hours. To avoid this, be aware of the expiration date of your visa. Do not confuse it with the visa validity (length of time you have permission to remain in the U.S.).
  1. It corresponds to the case in which an officer of the U.S. Customs considers a person, who previously had visa, ineligible or inadmissible. The visa is therefore canceled.
  1. If the visa has been stripped from the passport.
  1. If the visa has been used for a purpose other than that requested. For example, a person who applied for a tourist visa cannot then work, study or marry on this visa. If you do, you will lose your visa.
  2. The person who has a visa spends long periods at home or travels frequently to visit family and friends could be considered suspicious to immigration authorities and, consequently, the visa may be revoked.
